The St Amant High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps just finished a most successful year. The most recent Drill Meet, a win at the LSU Pershing Rifles Drill Meet, was on April 5th. A first place in Personnel Inspection, Color Guard Drill, Armed Basic Drill and Overall Armed Drill lead the way for the Gator Cadet Corps to the overall first place finish. The rest of the years Drill Meet success is available on our web site, http://www.stamantnjrotc.org. The success of this year was marked by the selection of the unit as a “Most Distinguished Unit, with Academic Honors”. This is the second year in a row for the selection as “Most Distinguished Unit”, but, the first with the additional designation “with Academic Honors”. The most rewarding successes of the year came off the competitive field and were the awarding of scholarships to three of our graduating cadets and the affirmative career plans that each graduate has made. Jonathan Delatte with a 4.0 GPA, received an NROTC scholarship to LSU, with a four year value of over $58,000. Jermie Joseph, with a 3.5 GPA, was the recipient of an NROTC scholarship to Southern University, with a four year value of over $56,000. Jonathan and Jermie will be members of the Southern University NROTC program. Their scholarships were presented by Captain Kent Flowers, the Professor of Naval Science, from Southern University, Baton Rouge. Their four year scholarships cover, room, board, tuition, fees and a $250 a month stipend, The stipend grows progressively each year by $50 per month. Melvin Pierre received a nearly full ride scholarship to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). His scholarship is valued, in excess of $127,000. Each of these students will join the military upon graduation. Jonathan, at the completion of LSU will go on to Medical school and be commissioned an Ensign in the Navy. Jonathan plans on becoming a Flight Surgeon and be duel qualified as a doctor and pilot. Jermie, on graduating from Southern University, will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S.
